language games
So we've been having language battles at night during prayer time. Yes, we here in the Cornett family have been warring over the proper language to refer to God during the Lord's prayer. It all started when Michael's Sunday school class learned the Lord's prayer two years ago. Just recently, our pastor has been preaching through the petitions in the Lord's prayer, so the kids have wanted to say it together at the end of our prayer time together right before bed. That's when the battle began. We'd recite it together: "our Father, who art (is) in heaven, hallowed be ..."
Andy and Caroline: "your name.
Michael: "thy name.
Andy and Caroline: Your kingdom come (Caroline pronounces it "lor kingdum")
Michael: Thy kingdom come.
Caroline: (interrupts prayer with a shout) No, Michael - it's your kingdom come!
Michael: No it isn't! We say "Thy Kingdom," Caroline!
Caroline: No we don't! We say "Your," Michael! I - want - to - say - YOUR!
Michael: No, it's "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done!"
Caroline: I don't want to say Thy! (Caroline breaks into tears, effectively ending prayer time.)
There we have it, friends - just how formal is our prayer language? I've tried hard to teach them that in praying we use our normal words to talk to God. Caroline, not having been in Michael's class two years ago, is used to hearing me use "your and yours" in the prayer and picked it right up. Michael is offended and claims it isn't right. So sometimes we make it almost all the way through, each peacefully using their own version of the words, only to hit disaster with "lors is the glory" or "for Thine is the glory ..." Ah me. Are we Presbyterians, or what!

My favorite family prayer story so far....
We were on vacation in March 2005 and our three-year-old son, Andrew, had new sandals for the beach. Because they were new he had some blisters from them. So then it's prayer time one night when we model simple prayers for them. Here's how this one went....
Parents: Thank you God for Mommy.
Andrew: Thank you God for Mommy.
Parents: Thank you God for Daddy.
Andrew: Thank you God for Daddy.
Parents: Thank you God for my sister.
Andrew: Thank you God for my blister.
At that point we just cracked up and prayer time was over. :-)
